The "MyObservatory" is a widely acclaimed weather application that offers tailored weather services. Users can access real-time weather information such as temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, wind direction, and speed, alongside weather photographs sourced from nearby weather stations based on their location preference. Updates on weather photos and rainfall data are provided at 5-minute and 15-minute intervals, respectively. Other data is refreshed every 10 minutes, with the update time indicated at the bottom of the main interface.
It is important to note that the notification feature for weather alerts, Special Weather Tips, and Location-based Rain Forecast is facilitated through the Apple Push Notification service (APNs). Users should refrain from solely relying on the mobile app for critical weather updates, as factors like network congestion and mobile connectivity may cause delays ranging from 5 to 20 minutes or more in receiving notifications issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.
Enabling Location-based Rain Forecast notifications may lead to slightly increased battery consumption and data usage. To conserve battery life, users can selectively enable this feature during rainy or pre-outdoor activity periods and disable it on sunny days or post-outdoor engagements. Additionally, adjusting settings for less frequent updates and reduced location accuracy within the notification function's advanced settings can help optimize battery usage.
While "MyObservatory" is a complimentary application, users should be aware that data charges apply as per their mobile network provider's tariff. High costs may be incurred during roaming; hence, it is advisable to disable "Data Roaming" in your device settings.
The app offers two options for setting user location: automatic detection via smartphone services or manual designation on the map. If automatic detection fails, the last known location or default "Hong Kong Observatory" will be displayed. Weather data at user-specified locations is sourced from nearby meteorological stations, with alternative data from select Observatory headquarters used when local data is unavailable. A ▲ symbol will indicate such data substitution.
Please be mindful that the weather information displayed on "MyObservatory" may slightly differ due to variations in station terrain and height, as well as discrepancies in user location estimations by mobile devices.
The app’s clock automatically synchronizes with the Observatory's Internet Time Server to display HKT time; variations from smartphone time displays may occur.
Users have access to a direct link to browse the Observatory's Facebook Page within the app. Logging into a Facebook account enables enhanced features but requires users to adhere to Facebook Page guidelines and platform privacy policies.
